Wine Tasting: German(ic) Wines

Leth Gruner Veltliner, Steinagrund, Austria 2015

Regular Price $18.99 Sale Price $14.99

Gruner, Gruner, how do I love thee? Quite easily as the wine is delicious. Lovely peach notes upfront followed by a creamy apple pie mouthfeel and bright acidity. If this is your first Gruner, welcome!

Novacella Kerner, Alto Adige, Italy 2016

Regular Price $22.99 Sale Price $17.99

Kerner is one of those grapes (like Muller-Thurgau) that was made by a German mad scientist in the early 20th century. As it ripens easily and is unfussy about locale, it’s been successfully planted in Austria, England, Japan and, of course, Alto Adige. Melon and nectarine, with citrus hints abound. The wine is rich and taut with electrifying acidity.

Domaine Pfister Riesling, Alsace, France 2014

Regular Price $24.99 Sale Price $19.99

As we all know, Riesling can be made as dry or less dry wines, depending on a myriad of factors such as  the ripeness of the grape, soil composition and the wishes of the winemaker. This is a dry Riesling, in the Alsatian style. River stone and green apple waft from the glass with tart apple and lime flavors following. Very crisp, very clean, very minerally, very good.

Leitz Pinot Noir Rose Sekt, Rheingau, Germany

Regular Price $31.99 Sale Price $24.99

This wine is just lovely. Understated and elegant, it’s also delicious. Strawberry and raspberry aromas lead into berry and pear flavors punctuated by the fine bubbles and berry tartness. Just a touch of sweetness makes the package complete.
