It’s going to get seriously cold this week, so you’ll want a wine with density, depth and structure to keep you warm. Sounds like the description of a Bandol to me. Which is a bit counter-intuitive, if you think about it.

Bandol is located in Provence, along the Mediterranean coast east of Marseille. It gets and stays pretty warm in Provence, and even in the winter, average temperatures hover around 50℉. But the famous mistral that brings hot winds during the summer will also bring bone-chilling cold winds during January and February. Perhaps the thin blooded denizens of Bandol learned about the windchill factor long ago.

Anyway, Bandol reds are primarily made from Mourvèdre along with Grenache and Cinsault. They are very often tannic wines that require some time in bottle and are usually more powerful than charming. This wine is very much in that style, however, is more reticent than unwelcoming. Savor this wine in the glass and allow it to open up and you’ll find herbal, floral and bright fruit lurking along side of the dominating tannins. This wine will be perfect with roasted meats and hearty stews and, unlike those sweet Napa Cabernets, will actually improve over time. But as its already 5 years old, it’s also immensely satisfying now.
