Great wine for $20

2017 Vincent Paris Selections Syrah

VdP des Collines Rhodaniennes

Regular price: $17.99

It’s winter. Ergo, it’s often cold. And wet. A fireplace and a dog seem to be necessary. And a bottle of Syrah. Why Syrah, you ask? Because a good Northern Rhone Syrah is heart warming and food friendly. And when its cold and wet, food is a requirement.

Vincent Paris is often referred to as a rising star in the Northern Rhone, but this, his 20th vintage, pretty much establishes his star in the firmament. He grew up in Cornas, and inherited his grandfather’s holdings there, so, of course he knows his way around Syrah. This example from de-classified (and young) vines in Crozes-Hermitage shows extraordinary polish and skill.

Its lively and fragrant, well balanced and fresh. Unoaked, its ridiculously friendly, yet manages to be very fulfilling. The alcohol is well in check (12.5%) and the wine is no more than medium bodied, but it’s got grip and the vibrant acidity keeps suggesting another sip. And another.
