Rosé is not a rarity any longer and neither is Pinot Noir, but for many, a Rosé made of Pinot Noir is still an oddity. Well, then, how about a Pinot Noir Rosé from Bugey? How different is that?
In truth, not really all that different. Bugey is one of the lesser known, but well established wine regions along the French-Swiss border. And Pinot Noir is a grape than prefers cool but sunny climates, which is exactly what you find in the foothills of the Jura Mountains. And Rosé? Well, everyone makes Rosé, and always has, its ‘discovery’ by American consumers is a couple of millenia behind its invention.
As PInot Noir Rosé go, this one is bold and rich, with bright berry flavors and substantial grip and length. No, its not sweet. No, a darker, more deeply colored Rosé is not sweeter than its paler cousin. This is, frankly, a Rosé for red wine drinkers, as the longer skin contact (from which its darker color emerged) also leaves behind some weight and tannic structure. But, alas, most red wine drinkers won’t give this wine a chance. They’re too afraid that the boys at the club will find out and laugh.
No problem. More for us.
