Tasting notes, Wines for Thanksgiving; Saturday, Nov. 19, 2022

                 Happy Thanksgiving!

2020 Luneau-Papin
Clos des Allees
$29.99 / Case Price $24
Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine / France
100% Melon de Bourgogne
This rare, single vineyard Muscadet comes from 40+ year-old vines and ages for 9 months in underground glass tanks. The Clos des Allees is unique for its intense minerality and rich texture.
2020 Boyer-Martenot
Bourgogne Blanc
$49.99 / Case Price $40
Meursault / Beaune / France
100% Chardonnay
On occasion White Burgundy (and especially Meursault) can feature a touch too much richness and oak barrel influence. This is not so for the Bourgogne Blanc from Boyer-Martenot, as this particular grower unusually employs any new barrels for fermentation or ageing.
2019 Torii Mor
Pinot Gris
On Sale for $14.99
Willamette Valley / Oregon / US
100% Pinot Gris
Once the darling of the Willamette Valley, Pinot Gris has fallen out of favor largely, with many growers deciding to grow Chardonnay in its place. While sentimentality may play into my assessment of this round, tropical bottling, I feel confident this is a great choice for poultry.
2021 Kurtasch Schiava
“Alte Reben”
$29.99 / Case Price $24
Alto Adige / Italy
100% Schiava
Pale hued and filled with spicy, floral aromatics, Kurtasch’s Schiava is as refreshing and bright as one could possibly ask out of a red wine. “Alte Reben” refers to relatively old vines employed for this bottling, which is the product of many small growers and the cooperative Kurstasch winery.
2020 Camile Melinand
Chiroubles
$34.99 / Case Price $28
Chiroubles / Beaujolais / France
100% Gamay
Chiroubles is the highest elevation Cru in Beaujolais, its wines known for their freshness and occasional austerity. Melinand’s example is sourced from 50 year-old vines planted in pink granite. The wine is full flavored and well balanced with the potential to be cellared for 5 years or more.
2019 Martinelle
Ventoux Rouge
On sale for $21.99
Lafare / Southern Rhone/ France
65% Grenache, 18% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre, 2% Counoise
Established in 2001, this tiny domain consists of just 30 acres of terraced vineyards, planted at 900 feet above sea level. This Ventoux Rouge possesses a remarkably fresh finish provided by its welcome natural acidity.
