Tasting notes, Hard-to-find Pinot Noir; April 8, 2023

Copain Kiser Vineyard ‘Combe de Gres’ Anderson Valley 2014

Regular Price $60

Sale price $30

Subtly and elegance are the hallmarks of this Pinot Noir, both due to the site and subsequent aging. Tart black cherry and herbal notes are present but hardly dominant; the general quietude of the wine speaks volumes rather than flavors themselves. It’s absolutely ready to drink and although it’s perhaps not at its peak (frankly, I’m not sure how to measure that anyway) the wine is incredibly balanced and integrated and thus delivers a complete package that satisfies without loud noises

Rivers-Marie Sonoma Coast 2021

Regular Price $55

Sale price $44

The wine itself is full and flavorful and the practice of using little or no new oak bears fruit here (yes, all puns intended.) Bright and juicy and lush, it is chock full of fruit and herbs and flowers and satisfies both at the head and the tail, with invigorating acidity balancing the fully ripe effects of the bright sunshine. This is a great example of New World Pinot Noir (nope, not Burgundian, whatever that means) made by a team that understands how to achieve balance while showcasing the positive attributes of ripeness

Domaine Boussey ‘Les Hauts Brin’ Monthélie Rouge 2019

Regular Price $42

Case price $33.60

The vineyard for this wine is located in the North-East corner of the appellation (not too far away from Volnay) and it has perfect Southern sun exposure. Typical cherry and earthy components shine in this easy drinking example of well made Burgundy Pinot Noir. It shows its relative youth but that brightness is an attribute not a deficiency.

Francois Carillon Monthélie Rouge 2020

Regular Price $45

Case Price $36

Francoise Carillon is best known for his white wines from the renowned Cote de Beaune, but the reds from here should be equally esteemed. Firm and complete, the wine shows fresh berry with herbal and earthy notes. Weightier than expected, delicious right now, it will certainly improve over the next decade.

This iconic site consistently delivers some of the most elegant and refined Pinots from Patz & Hall. This Pinot provides bright red fruits, freshness, elegant tannins and vibrant acidity. The nose is filled with the signature dried rose petal and cinnamon character of Hyde Vineyard. Well-integrated and refined tannins are knit together with strawberry, raspberry and spice flavors. The mid-palate is rich but delicate, showing the elegance that is classic Hyde.

Patz & Hall Hyde Vineyard Carneros/Napa Valley 2019

Regular Price $80

Sale price $64

The 2019 vintage is more robust and richer than typical, providing layers of ripe red currants, cassis, and Bing cherries along with a lifted purity and freshness that supports elegant and cleansing acidity. The nose is filled with the Hyde Vineyard signature dried rose petals and cardamom/cinnamon spice. The mouth has great depth of texture and flavor, showing composed, refined tannins that are knit together with strawberry, raspberry, and a hint of cocoa and Five spice powder. This 2019 is showing a richer, more powerful example of this legendary vineyard.
