Jean-Louis Tribouley and his wines exemplify the region. After careers as a carpenter and social worker, Tribouley received his professional baccalaureate with a specialization in viticulture and oenology, at the Lycée in Beaune, in Burgundy. In 2001, with his wife and daughters, he purchased vineyards in the southwest,
along the French side of the Pyrenees, north of Catalonia, Spain. Determined to make, as he states, ‘sincere’ wines, they handpick the harvest, use no chemicals in the vineyard or winery, and have even reverted to the use of a mule rather than tractor. Each vintage reflects the growing conditions in the vineyards. Domaine Tribouley, like generations of farmers before him, makes natural wines, long before the term came in vogue.
This wine is from 60 year old vines, 80% grenache and 20% carignan, and is aged in concrete tanks. The result is a pure expression of fruit, unmarred by oak-imparted smoke, vanillan or spice. Concentrated and bold, the wine is nevertheless quite lithe and vibrant, with jammy dark berry intermingled with licorice, earthy and stoney components.
