Tasting notes, More Wines for Spring, April 20, 2019

2016 Alberto Loi ‘Theria’ Vermentino del Sardegna

Sardinia, Italy

Regular Price $24.99

Sale price $19.99

Sardinia really is one of the best places to grow grapes for wine in the world; bright sunshine, rocky soils, dry summers, salty and cooling Mediterranean breezes. This rich Vermentino illustrates that; ripe, lush fruit that still retains acidity making this a wine that works well with a range of foods. Easy to understand, easy to like, its friendly and delicious.

2014 Stadt Krems Riesling ‘Grillenparz’ Reserve

Niederosterreich, Austria

Regular Price $42.99

Sale price $32.99

Stadt Krems was founded by (and still owned by) the city of Krems in 1452 and has been making wines since then. This particular wine comes from a rocky 1st Growth vineyard that gets great sun exposure during daylight hours and then chills dramatically when the sun goes down. The slow ripening fruit is picked very late then vinified dry (like most Austrian rieslings). Big, rich, and full, this wine, which has benefited from some time in bottle, is full of peach and citrus flavors and finishes with persistent acidity.

2017 Domaine Aleofane Crozes-Hermitage Blanc

Rhone Valley, France

Regular Price $24.99

Sale price $31.99

50% Roussanne, 50% Marsanne, this Rhone blend is bold and exotix, laced with tropical fruit and honeyed tones and and a smokey finish. This is a dramatic, full-bore wine that is nonetheless balanced and food friendly.

2018 Frog’s Leap ‘La Grenouille Rougante’ Rosé

Mendocino, California

Regular Price $22.99

Sale price $17.99

Called the ‘blushing frog’ (get it?), this is a blend of carignan and valdiguie with perhaps some charbono and zinfandel. It’s fresh and crisp, and brightly fruity and dry and tastes like a Provencal rosé

2016 Pelissero ‘Munfrina’ Dolcetto d’Alba

Piedmont, Italy

Regular Price $23.99

Sale price $18.99

Bright and fresh with dark cherry and almond flavors this easy drinking Dolcetto has weight and fruit and acidity and tannins all in perfect balance. There’s no drama in this wine, it’s smooth and delicious.

2015 Château L’Etoile de Viaud Lalande de Pomerol

Bordeaux, France

Regular Price $24.99

Sale price $19.99

90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, this is a classic Right Bank blend with lush plummy fruit, defined structure and balancing acidity. 2015 was a warm vintage so this is a Bordeaux that will likely drink better younger (now) rather than later.
