The most famous wine in the middle Loire Valley is Vouvray, made entirely of Chenin Blanc, one the greatest and most versatile wine grapes on the planet. Lesser known, and just across the Loire River, is tiny Montlouis, a fifth of the size of its neighbor and vastly under-appreciated. Like Vouvray, Chenin Blanc from Montlouis can be made in a variety of styles…still, sparkling, sec (dry), demi-sec, or sweet. This wine is dry; flinty and lemony crisp, but with the floral, honeysuckle and tart pear notes that so define Chenin Blanc.
Le Rocher des Violettes’ proprieter and winemaker Xavier Weisskopf is a up-and-coming star in Loire and his wines are fresh and focused, taut, minerally and long-lived. This wine, from 2015, has benefitted from time in bottle and has filled out from its youthful angular presentation. Rich, full yet still lip-smackingly tart, it’s absolutely the wine to drink tonight.
